Day 18 Marseille France
We got up at 6:30 for all our morning stuff . I ordered a mocha, but they didn't deliver it. They delivered something else. We got to watch them park the boat next to the pier, which was a fascinating process.
Marseilles' main street, and on to the Vieux Port. Stop at the 19th century, Neo-Byzantine Notre-Dame de la Garde.
then pass by the impressive 19th century Longchamp Palace, which was built to celebrate the opening of the Marseille canal.
We came back to the ship, had lunch, and played some trivia games in the lounge, but we lost. We tried to go down to play Scrabble and no one wanted to play. So Paul and I played each other, but I suck at that. I went and walked around the track for half an hour in the afternoon and again after dinner. It was nice because it wasn't people-y.
This is our trip of the day. We met in the theater, got our green 19 sticker and waited for our tour. This half-day tour is a mix of driving and walking, and there will be stair-climbing involved as you explore this town that boasts a healthy industry, with a quaint fish market that is still held in the Old Port. Enjoy a narrated drive through Marseilles, passing the forts of St. Nicholas and St. John, before traveling along the Canebiere.
an enormous Basilica that sits on a hill overlooking the city and boasts superb views of the Vieux Port,
Our thoughts about this day trip was that it wasn't so great and it was overpriced. Basically they just drove us up to the cathedral through town. Pointed out sites as we passed. Stopped at the bottom of a great big hill for everybody to walk up to the pretty small, by comparison, basilica. Then they drove us back in town and parked so people could do some shopping for about an hour and then took us back to the ship. We had the option to stay in town and wander around, but there really wasn't much to see.
Paul's vanilla bean souffle with Godiva chocolate sauce
Mine was a mocha something, it was tasty.
It is time to start eating better and drinking less non water.
